Fishing in the Carolinas

As you may already know, there are some really excellent, unique fishing opportunities in the Carolinas.  You won’t need a license for saltwater fishing, but you will for fishing lakes, streams, and ponds.   You can purchase your license at www.ncwildlife.org or visit www.dnr.sc.gov.  You can also purchase fishing licenses at many hardware and general stores.

On the South Carolina coast, you can fish for amberjack, barracuda, shark, king mackerel, and many other species.  Inland, you can fish for trout, bass, blue catfish, and channel catfish.

In North Carolina, the Outer Banks provide some of the best fishing opportunities in the world from fly-fishing to deep-sea to light-tackle.  You can fish for channel bass, whiting, flounder, Spanish mackerel, big and small bluefish, pompano, and many, many more.  Unless you are a deep-sea angler, you won’t need a boat along the 300 miles of coastline since there are so many jetties and piers in the Atlantic off of North Carolina.  In fact, about 25% of the Atlantic’s piers are in North Carolina.  As far as Outer Banks fishing goes, certain piers more popular than others.  Nags Head is known for flounder, bluefish, mullet, and striped bass.  Ocracoke Island is known for its sea mullet, bluefish, and pompano.  If you’re looking to fish big amberjack and tarpon, visit the Bogue Banks in the Neuse River region.

Serious anglers don’t stop at the Outer Banks when fishing North Carolina.  There are hundreds of lakes, rivers, and streams in the mountains that are a major source of trout, muskies, catfish, and small and large-mouth bass.  Trout fishers will find the Great Smoky Mountains and the streams of the Blue Ridge awesome places to check out.  Some other great places to fish in North Carolina are the Linville River, the Toe River, the Globe section of the Johns River Gorge, and Howard’s Creek.
