Gun Control

Let’s start by reiterating the obvious fact that guns do not kill people.  People kill people.  Spoons also don’t cause obesity, so hopefully the government doesn’t try to ban them next.

The fact is, gun control will NOT stop criminals from committing or attempting murder.  There are over $300 million guns in the U.S. and if a person wants a gun, they’re going to get one, especially if they’re planning an elaborate killing spree.  Gun control has actually been proven NOT to work, both in Chicago and Washington, D.C.  In BOTH cities, when guns were banned, gun violence INCREASED.  Gun bans are proven to not work.

The federal government is obliged to protect law-abiding citizens.  Criminals do not abide by the laws; they purposefully go against them.  If gun laws are to be enacted, they should allow law-abiding citizens to protect themselves.  There is nothing wrong with background checks or gun registration.  These practices are good and need to stay in effect.

The best way to decrease gun violence in the United States is to make all gun crimes federal crimes.  There should be mandatory federal prison sentences for any and all gun crimes.  A minimum of 10 years for any crime would be effective.  In fact, violent crime in the U.S. is down 23% over the past decade because of stricter prison terms for criminals.  Punishing criminals properly and harshly is the only way to decrease gun violence.
