Increase in Trophy Whitetails

Increase in Trophy Whitetails

The Boone & Crockett Club has some very exciting news for deer hunters.  According to historical records, there has been a 400% increase in trophy whitetails recorded in the last 30 years.  From 1980-1985, 617 trophy whitetails were entered into the B & C records while a whopping 3,090 were recorded from 2005-2010.  The President of the Boone & Crockett Club, Ben Wallace, says, “In 1900, less than 500,000 whitetails remained [inAmerica].  But habitat programs, research, science-based management, regulations and enforcement, all led and funded by hunters, brought this game animal back to extraordinary levels.  Today there are more than 32 million whitetails!”

The Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) is certainly to thank for a lot of this wildlife conservation and land management success.  While the Boone & Crockett scoring system was originally put in place to record details of possibly disappearing species, it is now used as a way to track conservation effort successes.  Other species besides whitetails are also scored to trace and detail historic conservation developments.  From 2005-2010, North Carolina recorded 5 B & C Trophy Whitetails and Georgiarecorded 23.  Search for North Carolina hunting land for sale and Georgia hunting land for sale here.

While the Boone & Crockett Club provides a great amount of detail on trophy animals harvested, note that their recorded entries do not match the true number of 160+ inch whitetails harvested in North Carolina and Georgia.  Given the right nutrition and age structure, you can grow giant whitetails almost anywhere.

If you are not a member of the Quality Deer Management Association, the only question is why not?
