Spring Turkey Hunting in South Carolina

For most South Carolina counties, turkey season will be opening soon!  For certain counties the season opened March 15th, with the remainder opening April 1st or 2nd.  Youth Turkey Hunt Day (for hunters 17 and under) is March 31st.  The season closes May 1st for all counties.

All turkey hunters must possess a valid turkey tag. Turkey hunters over the age of 16 must also have hunting licenses and big game permits.  Check your hunting license and be sure it says “Turkey Tags.”  If not, you will need to order tags.  The tags are free and can be ordered online as well as given out at certain businesses.

The 2012 spring turkey season outlook is good, which is great news for the estimated 50,000 turkey hunters this year.  Every summer, DNR conducts a summer turkey survey to estimate reproduction of turkeys in South Carolina.  Survey results were better in 2011 and 2010 than previous years.  For further information on turkey hunting in SC, check the DNR website.
